This is a special theatrical adaptation of the homonymous classic short story by the internationally acclaimed Skiathian author. The story, performed wonderfully from an actor and a musician, points out the dimensions that human loneliness and "incurable" doubt take on anything unfamiliar or seemingly foreign. The hero of the short story is "a foreigner within his own world." Of course, he is neither a foreigner nor an American.
““The American” is a Greek immigrant, who returns to his island after 25 years where no one recognizes him. He walks alone on the harbor dock and wanders around the narrow streets of the small district and the ruins of his family house. The only reason why he still hopes is Love. Thanassis Sarantos performs Papadiamantis’ Work superbly. He peeks into the action and shifts to all characters under the support of music and sounds composed by the scilled musician Lambros Pigounis. The result is a “conversation” between Papadiamantis’ glittering language and music. The atmospheric sounds produced by an alternative use of the piano are consistent with all the diversity, strength and wealth of the soul stirring and aberrational language of this classic story.
Who is this stranger, the handsome and well-dressed man who wanders at the port dock on Christmas Eve? He seems like a foreigner, he seems American. Why does he wander around the narrow streets of our small district at such late hour? What is he doing around the ruins of Stathis Mothonios’ house? Why does he stand and wait in the middle of the road and why does he stare for that long at Michalena’s half-closed window? And above all, why does he have a shaved moustache and beard?.
